The image takes the original Star-Spangled Banner and treats it like what it really is in 2026: not a museum piece behind glass, but something that’s lived outside. The colors are scraped, faded, and layered like paint on an old playground wooden backboard. The stars are still there, the stripes are still there, but they’re worn from weather, from time, from use.
I dropped the rim right into the bottom stripes because in America, glory isn’t just saluted. It’s shot at. Every kid who has ever chased a buzzer-beater on a cracked court knows the feeling — that mix of hope and hustle under a hoop that’s seen a thousand misses before one swish. That’s the same story the flag tells. The real Star-Spangled Banner survived the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814 because it was tough cloth, not perfect cloth. This version survives the blacktop.
“DISTRESSED GLORY” is arched over the top like an old gym banner because I wanted to name the feeling directly. Glory in this country has never been pristine. It’s dented, repainted, argued over, and still standing. The distressing isn’t disrespect. It’s proof of life.
The “SHOOTA x AMERICA 250” mark on the side is intentional timing. 2026 is America’s 250th birthday, and today is Flag Day. I'm marking 250 years by putting the flag where a lot of Americans learn about teamwork, failure, comeback, and pride — on the court.
