This “Higher Goals” print is inspired by David Hammons's 30-foot towering basketball hoops studded with metal bottle caps in Harlem and in downtown Brooklyn.

The essential nature of the sculpture is not esthetic but social. ‘It’s an anti-basketball sculpture,’ the artist, David Hammons explained. ‘Basketball has become a problem in the black community because the kids aren’t getting an education. They’re pawns in someone else’s game. That’s why it’s called ‘Higher Goals.’ It means you should have higher goals in life than basketball.

We created this shirt to pay tribute to Black History Month by highlighting Black artists and diverse forms of cultural expression across the African diaspora.
